Why is mood dropping in the dungeon?
Dungeon stay penalties stack with hunger and wrong-race food. Winning fights does not clear stay.
Dungeon Settlers mood and stress: race diets, dungeon-stay penalties, sleep rooms, and how negative mood raises stress until a collapse can kill the member.
Food, stay penalties, mental collapse.

This Dungeon Settlers mood page is the survival HUD: mood above zero drains stress, mood below zero raises it, and a Mental Collapse followed by a second full stress bar is death — not a nap. Hunger at zero becomes Near Death and needs feeding. Elves take meat penalties, Lizardmen take vegetable penalties. Dungeon stay stacks extra mood hits the longer you remain below. Sleep only counts in real bedrooms. Verified September 5, 2026 · Early Access · Sep 4, 2026 · Steam.
Dungeon Settlers will let you win every fight and still bury the party. Pause combat all you want; the stay clock and the kitchen do not pause unless you leave.

Mood is not a happiness sticker. It is the valve on stress. While mood is positive, stress ticks down. While mood is negative, stress ticks up. Food, rest, rooms, dungeon stay, and race diet all write into mood. Combat victory does not reset the valve. A party that chains wins on an empty stomach is filling a death bar between pauses.
The UI cap players see is about 30 on snapshot sheets. Treat ~30 as a snapshot ceiling, not a promised official maximum forever. What matters in play is the sign: above zero versus below. Sitting at +2 is a recovery. Sitting at −2 is a countdown, even if the number looks small.

Higher-level members demand better food, gear, and rooms. A level-1 staple that held mood at +4 can fail a level-8 veteran. Upgrade kitchens and bedrooms as research opens them, or the valve flips on your best fighter first.
If two people are already negative, the next room is a stress decision, not a loot decision. See expedition for portal and stay. This page is why you obey those rules.
When stress fills, the unit enters Mental Collapse and the stress bar resets. Collapse is a crisis state with combat and control penalties — treat it as “this person is no longer a reliable pawn.” If stress fills again while they are still in (or through) that spiral, they die. There is no coming back. Dungeon Settlers permadeath is not only head HP.
The loop is therefore: keep mood positive so the first bar never completes, and if it does, abort the floor. A collapsed member needs camp: legal bed, legal food, no more stay ticks. Pushing “one more vein” after collapse is how you donate a recruit slot.
Head / torso zero is a different Near Death (Aid Kit, operating table). Mental death is the stress double-fill. Carry kits for bodies and meals for minds. Mixing the two rescues is how people feed a bleeding unit and forget the collapsed one.
Inscriptions spend offerings at the Goddess Statue. If they are one stress bar from deletion, the offering dies with them. Camp first.
Food is tagged. Elves take a meat penalty. Lizardmen take a vegetable penalty. Humans are the flexible middle in current recruit pools. If you cook one stew for everyone, you are choosing who to punish. Mood penalties from wrong food stack with stay penalties until stress is a combat mechanic.
This is a recruitment problem before it is a kitchen problem. A four-Elf meat-heavy loot plan is a self-own. A Lizardman-only salad farm is also a self-own. Mix races on purpose or accept a split pantry.
Store meat dishes and vegetable dishes in ways cooks can see (ground dump, then storage — same rule as resources). Ban auto-eat on the high-tier trays so the wrong race cannot snack the last legal meal.
We are not publishing an invented official percent. The directional fact is enough: wrong food lowers mood. Lower mood raises stress. Plan menus so the valve stays positive at camp, then pack only legal rations downstairs.
Time in the dungeon applies Dungeon Stay mood penalties. They stage up the longer you remain, and they scale with management difficulty. Community sheets quote large negatives at high stages (for example values around −24 at the top of a table). Those exact stage numbers are TBA by difficulty and patch — do not treat a wiki screenshot as a guaranteed official curve. The playable truth is simpler: long floors tax mood even if you win.
Monsters also respawn or patrol as you linger. Stay is not only a HUD debuff; it is a reinforcement clock. The correct greed check is: will this next room pay for the stay tick it costs? If mood is already negative, the answer is usually no.
When a floor gives you a portal, that is a stay valve. Whole party in the portal room or the straggler is missing-and-dead. Winning a fight in the hallway while one person portals is how you convert a mood problem into a roster problem.
Floor depletion hitting zero hurts drops. Stay hurts minds. Do not farm a depleted floor “because we are already here” while stay is red. You are paying sanity for worse loot.
Hunger dropping too far triggers auto-seek food and mood hits. Hunger at 0 is Severe Hungry, then Near Death, and the unit loses control. They will not neatly pause-queue a skill. Another character must feed them. That is a two-person job in a four-person permadeath party. If the feeder is also starving, you have a camp failure that showed up underground.
Do not rely on auto-eat of luxury food to prevent this. Auto-eat deletes the mood medicine. Pack cheap legal staples on auto, keep good meals manual, and count feeder rations like Aid Kits.
Wound Near Death wants Aid Kits / surgery. Hunger Near Death wants food in another pair of hands. Bring both. A kit will not feed them. A skewer will not close a head wound.
Energy drains while awake and on skills; sleep and rest near beds or a campfire restore it. Empty energy makes bad fights. Empty hunger makes corpses. Track both.
Beds that are not in a legal indoor bedroom do not give the rest the mood system wants. Enclosure rules are picky: walls, doors, corners. A mattress in a workshop is a workshop. Private rooms beat shared rooms for sleep quality once you can afford them. Higher-level settlers notice the difference.
After a dungeon, the recovery loop is dump loot, eat legal food, sleep in classified bedrooms, keep research running, then portal again. Skipping sleep to “save a day” is how you start the next floor already negative.
Behavior flags exist so night-shift researchers and haulers do not all collapse in the portal. Set Prioritize Sleep on combat cores after a stay-heavy run. Leave one cook awake if hunger bars are ugly. Do not leave everyone on Wait for Orders in a hallway at 3 a.m. colony time.
Dining rooms improve meals. Recreation rooms improve downtime. Private bedrooms improve sleep. All of them want indoor classification via settlement. None of them beat a wrong-race menu. Build the room, then cook the right pile.
Graves matter after a death. Dumping a corpse through the settlement portal is an insult and hits attitudes. Mood is social as well as metabolic. If you already lost one member, do not cheapen the funeral and then wonder why the survivors collapsed on the next floor.

Management difficulty changes how hard stay and needs hit. If you are learning the valve, do not also max the hunger/mood sliders. Learn the sign of the bar first.
Legal indoor beds, one legal meal per race in the party, auto-eat bans on luxury food, short first expedition. That is the beginner guide mood plan. Everything else is how you stop winning fights into a double stress bar.
Cut stay on expedition and fix rooms on settlement. Ban luxury auto-eat on resources.
Dungeon stay penalties stack with hunger and wrong-race food. Winning fights does not clear stay.
First fill is Mental Collapse (bar resets). Filling stress again can kill the character permanently.
No. Elves take meat penalties; Lizardmen take vegetable penalties. Split the pantry.
They can enter Near Death and lose control. Another unit must feed them. Kits do not replace food.
Use a real enclosed bedroom. Hallway beds do not give the rest mood needs.
Treat ~30 as a snapshot UI cap, TBA if patches change the ceiling. The sign (positive vs negative) is the mechanic.
