Dungeon Settlers Inscriptions

Dungeon Settlers inscriptions: five candidates per level, Retry rerolls, rarity odds, and why a bad legendary skip still beats locking a dead common forever.

Level-up five-pick-one that sticks.

At A Glance

This Dungeon Settlers inscriptions page is the level-up contract: inscriptions are permanent, they appear on levels 2–12, each upgrade shows five candidates, you pick one, Retry rerolls the whole set, and owned inscriptions do not repeat. Consecration offerings at the Goddess Statue are not refunded. Legendary names and drop odds below are a third-party snapshot (DS_B.0.4.11) — TBA versus live Early Access, not a guaranteed official table. Verified September 5, 2026 · Early Access · Sep 4, 2026 · Steam.

Dungeon Settlers already locks skill trees to recruitment backgrounds. Some inscriptions grant extra trees anyway. That is how a sword hire becomes a hybrid without a Skill Reset Elixir. Read the five cards. The statue does not give them back.

How do inscription picks work from level 2 to 12?

A unit that hits the XP threshold does not auto-level in the field. You build or find a Goddess Statue, walk up, and complete the level-up there. Each level from 2 to 12 rolls inscription candidates. The roll shows five. You confirm one. That inscription is a permanent trait-like modifier: combat math, work, resistances, or — in some cards — a whole extra skills tree.

Eleven decisions is a build. It is also eleven ways to brick a permadeath hero. Pause. Read the five. If you do not understand a card, it is not “probably fine.” It is an unread contract.

Main and sub skill points still happen

Level-ups also grant Main and Sub skill points. Inscriptions are the extra layer, not a replacement for the tree. Spend SP on the weapon you actually equipped. Spend the inscription on the hole the background left.

Why the statue is a settlement building

If the statue is not placed, XP sits unused. That is a settlement fail, not an XP bug. Place it indoor-legal if the building requires enclosure, then run a dedicated level-up hour after a successful expedition.

What does Retry do, and will I see duplicates?

Retry throws away the current five and rolls a new five. It does not let you keep two cards from the old set. If one of the five is the tree you needed, Retry is how you lose it. Use Retry when the entire set is dead for this unit — five Commons that fight the race diet, or five combat cards on a camp-only researcher you intend to keep out of combat.

Owned inscriptions do not repeat on that character. The pool shrinks as they age. That is good (no double-stack of the same name) and bad (the last levels can feel thin if you burned Retry early). Recruits can also spawn already holding an inscription; inspect before you pay. A pre-rolled legendary on a hire is a different economy than a level-2 Common.

Retry is not a pity timer

Nothing in live player-facing copy promises that Retry raises legendary chance. Treat each five as a fresh draw under the same hidden table. Snapshot odds below are already marked TBA; do not invent a guaranteed pity.

Inspect hires for inscriptions

The recruit UI can hide talent until you inspect. Inscriptions on a candidate may cost extra. If the inscription is a tree you cannot use, you are paying for clutter. See recruitment.

What is the DS_B.0.4.11 inscription snapshot — and why is it TBA?

A third-party data dump labeled DS_B.0.4.11 (Steam build noted on that dump as 25096615, extracted well before the 4 September 2026 Early Access launch) listed about 95 inscriptions. Per-candidate rarity odds on that snapshot were about Common 80.7%, Uncommon 17%, Rare 2%, Legendary 0.3%. Those figures are not an official CanOpener guarantee. They are a TBA snapshot. Live EA can retune weights, add cards, or rename rarities. If a streamer quotes 0.3% as law, they are quoting a file extract, not a patch note.

Use the snapshot as a planning ceiling: Commons will dominate the five-card row. Legendaries are lottery tickets. Do not stall a level-up for twenty Retries “until Storm appears.” The offering is already spent.

How this site will treat numbers

Until a live client dump is re-verified, every percent on this page stays labeled snapshot / TBA. We will not present 80.7 as a Steam-store fact.

Pool size versus what you see

Ninety-five names in a dump does not mean ninety-five show at level 2. Filters (owned, maybe rank or race) can hide cards. If a wiki list is longer than your five, that is expected.

What were Capital Punishment, Perfection, and Storm on the snapshot?

The same DS_B.0.4.11 snapshot named three legendaries. Treat the effects as snapshot text, re-read in your client before you build around them.

Capital Punishment (snapshot): if an enemy’s combined head and body health is at or below 20%, a non-boss that takes damage can be executed. That is a cleanup tool, not a boss skip. Inscription of Perfection (snapshot): bumps all six talent ratings one step, with Genius as the top band — a growth card, not a damage proc. Inscription of the Storm (snapshot): a basic-attack crit splashes the same damage type onto nearby targets — a dense-room card that is wasted on isolated elites.

If your five-card row shows different legendary names, believe the client. Early Access will add weapons and races; the legendary trio is not a forever roster.

Image pendingSkill tree UI for tree-grant inscriptions

Do not Restart a good Rare for a named legendary

A Rare tree grant or a defensive inscription that keeps the head alive is usually worth more than a 0.3%-class lottery. Permadeath makes “I almost had Storm” a grave.

Can inscriptions grant extra skill trees?

Yes. Backgrounds decide the starting main and sub trees (sword, mace, bow, fire, and the rest on the skills page). Weapon / magic inscriptions can add a tree the hire never had. That is the hybrid path: City Guard plus a fire card, Poacher plus a shield card. You still need the weapon in hand for trees that check equipment, and you still spend skill points.

If the party already covers the role, prefer a combat math inscription over a sixth tree nobody will SP. If the party is three melee and no bow, a bow inscription on the Perception hire can be the whole expedition plan.

Skill Reset Elixir is not an inscription wipe

Elixirs reset skill points. They do not reliably unwind inscriptions. Do not pick a tree inscription “to try it” unless you like that identity forever.

How do Goddess Statue consecration offerings work?

At the statue you choose among consecration offerings. Higher offerings mean larger stat gains on that level-up. Then you still have to pick the inscription. Offerings are not refunded if you hate the five cards, if you Retry, or if the unit dies the next day. You also only complete a given level-up once. There is no “try bronze, then gold” on the same level.

That makes offering choice a bank decision. Poor colonies should not gold-plate a level-2 Common hunter. Rich colonies should not cheap out on the researcher who will sit in the lab for fifty days. Exact offering item names and multipliers stay TBA by patch; the one-way spend is the mechanic.

Dungeon Settlers character growth around a level-up moment

Who gets the expensive offering

Spend on high-talent combat cores and the Intelligence researcher you cannot replace. Do not gold-consecrate a spare hauler you will never take downstairs.

Death after offering

Permadeath deletes the inscription and the offering together. If mood & stress is already on Mental Collapse, do not statue-level in a panic before a suicide floor.

How should I pick without a full database?

Order of operations: (1) tree grant that fills a hole, (2) survival (head, collapse, carry weight) on a permadeath melee, (3) work speed on a camp specialist, (4) damage niceties, (5) Retry only if all five fail (1)–(4). Ignore trailer fantasy. Ignore snapshot legendaries until they are in the row.

Write the pick down. Future you will not remember why the bow hire has a mace inscription. The guides hub is for the loop; this page is for the statue hour.

When the five are all Commons

That is the snapshot table working as advertised. Pick the least harmful Common and go back to resources. Waiting for Rare is how offerings rot.

What next

If a tree is still missing after a pick, fix it on recruitment or skills — do not Retry a good card hoping the snapshot legendary appears.

FAQ

Can I remove an inscription later?

Treat inscriptions as permanent. Do not assume a refund or wipe unless a future patch says so in patch notes.

How many inscription choices does a character get?

One pick on each level from 2 through 12 (eleven picks if they live that long).

What does Retry do?

Rerolls all five candidates together. Owned inscriptions still will not repeat.

Are the 80.7% / 0.3% odds official?

No. They are a TBA third-party snapshot from DS_B.0.4.11, not a guaranteed CanOpener table.

Do statue offerings come back if I Retry?

No. Consecration offerings are not refunded.
