Dungeon Settlers combat guide: real-time with pause, status effects, head vs torso health, Near Death rescue, and why you queue skills instead of mashing.

Real-time with pause — queue before you commit.

~8 min read

At A Glance

Dungeon Settlers combat is real-time with pause: queue skills, items, and movement, then let the clock run. There is no turn limit and no undo after permadeath. Dungeon Settlers (Steam 2798330, CanOpener / CanOpener, WhisperGames) tracks head and torso health separately. This page is the pause-tactics manual for a four-person party. Verified September 5, 2026 · Steam.

Stun, bleed, burn, provoke, vulnerable, charge, and summons all matter. Physical versus magic is the damage split. If you wanted a round timer, you are in the wrong game; if you mash without pausing, you will donate a colonist.

How does pause combat work?

Pause is always legal. Dungeon Settlers will not punish you with a turn clock. It will punish you for issuing no orders. Queue movement, skills, and item use while time is stopped, then watch a short slice of real time to see whether the queue was stupid.

Dungeon Settlers pause-tactical combat with the party fighting
  • Do01Pause as soon as you hear or see aggro — not after the first head hit
  • Do02Place the high-Constitution body between the pack and the caster
  • Do03Queue one skill per member that actually matches equipped weapons
  • Do04Park Wait for Orders if people are drifting into extra packs
  • Do05Unpause for a breath, then pause on status icons or HP spikes
  • Do06Do not open the floor portal until combat is over

There is no “end of round” safety

Because there are no rounds, a bleed tick and a second enemy wind-up can land in the same second you were admiring a crit. Pause is how you insert an Aid Kit, a provoke, or a walk-back. If you only pause on your turn in your head, you are playing a different genre and losing colonists.

Auto Skill will spend energy when thresholds allow. That is useful for trash and lethal on the wrong target. For elites and bosses, take the queue yourself. Energy regenerates with rest at camp beds or campfires — a dungeon with empty bars is a settlement scheduling failure, not a DPS puzzle.

Queue movement like it is a skill

Flanking, line of sight, and not standing in acid are pause jobs. Walk the bow out of melee. Walk the mage off the provoke target if they should not be tanking. Overloaded members move like furniture — dump weight before the pull if expedition packing failed.

What happens when head or torso health hits zero?

Health is not a single heart pool. Head Health at 0 or below can put the unit into Near Death or kill them outright. Torso Health at 0 spills leftover damage into the head. Helmets and body armour wear from hits; weapons wear from attacks — repair on equipment before a deep floor.

EventWhat you should assume
Torso emptiedOverflow is now a head problem — pause immediately
Head emptiedNear Death or death; do not “finish the pack first”
Near DeathAnother member must Aid Kit or you carry them home
DeathPermanent. No revival. Hire a replacement later
Hunger 0Can also cascade into Near Death — feed, do not DPS

Protect the head on purpose

Beginners stare at the bigger torso bar and ignore the small one that actually ends the run. Helmet upgrades and not standing in cleave are head policy. Constitution talent on recruitment is how that bar starts less embarrassing.

Exact remaining-HP formulas and hidden DR stay TBA. Play the two bars you can see. If a tooltip says otherwise on your build, trust the tooltip.

Durability is a combat resource

A broken weapon in a pause queue is a skipped skill. A broken helmet is a head tax. Repair at camp benches; do not discover durability mid-boss. Material ladders (wood, bone, carapace, metals) belong on equipment — here you only need to know fights spend that ladder.

How do I rescue Near Death with an Aid Kit or Operating Table?

Near Death is the last pause you get. Another character uses an Aid Kit on the body in the dungeon, or you carry them to camp and finish the job on an Operating Table. After a successful save, after-effects can remain; a second Near Death can skip the courtesy and kill — treat that as TBA if your patch notes differ, but do not test it for fun.

Aid Kit is a queued item, not a cutscene

Pause, select a standing member, use the Aid Kit on the downed tile. If policies forbade all medical items, you will watch them die with kits in a bag. Set consumption policies at settlement before the portal. If the only person with a kit is also down, you are in a carry or permadeath fork.

You still cannot portal during combat. Rescue, then stack the four-person party (including the carried body) in the portal room. Missing-person rules on expedition apply to the downed too.

Operating Table is why camp medical exists

Some saves are too dirty for a hallway kit. Carry home, indoor room, Operating Table. If you never built the table because the camp was a hallway of beds, Near Death is permadeath with extra steps. Place it when research allows, inside a real enclosure.

Which statuses should I pause to answer?

Official combat language includes stun, bleed, burn, provoke, vulnerable, charge, and summons, plus poison, bind, disarm, barrier, and overload from the wider effect list. You do not need 711 effect IDs. You need a pause reflex when a name appears that stops actions or deletes HP.

StatusPause response
Stun / bind / disarmStop feeding that member into the pack; walk others
Bleed / poison / burnDecide whether to item, kill the source, or extract
ProvokeMake sure the frontliner is the one holding it
VulnerableSpend the window on the marked target — or get off the tile if it is you
ChargeSidestep during pause-move, do not eat it facechecking
Summoned addsCleave or focus per the caster’s pattern — TBA per monster
OverloadedDrop loot; this is not a “push through” buff

Match damage type to the enemy, not your favourite tree

Hits are Physical or Magic. A fire mage against a high fire resist wall is a pause to walk them back, not a reason to dump more Fire points. Backgrounds gated those trees on skills; inscriptions can patch a hole later. In the fight, swap who is on the target.

Ammunition is a status by another name

Bows can dry out. A paused archer with zero arrows is a melee dummy. Pack ammo policies like food policies. Do not discover empty quivers on an elite.

How should permadeath change the way I fight?

Once dead, there is no coming back. That sentence is the Steam pitch and the combat design. A beginner party is not a roguelike throwaway. You pause more, extract earlier, and spend Aid Kits that feel “wasteful.”

The first elite is not a tutorial corpse

If the frontliner’s head is melting, you leave the room. Expedition stay and depletion still matter, but a live colonist with empty pockets beats a legendary drop and a grave. Graves and respectful corpse handling are camp systems — they do not refund the tree you just lost.

Keep a spare worker at recruitment capacity so a death is a setback, not a run end. That spare should already have a bed and a food policy, not spawn from grief.

Mental collapse is a combat death too

Mood below zero fills stress. Full stress can Mental Collapse; filling it again can kill. Dungeon stay from a long expedition is how a “won” fight still deletes someone on the walk to the portal. Short floors are a permadeath tactic, not cowardice.

Combat mistakes that waste a member

Scan before you unpause the next pull.

MistakeFix
Playing unpaused like an action RPGPause on aggro and on every status spike
Ignoring the head barHelmets and walk-backs are the tank
Portal while swords are outCombat locks travel
Medical items forbidden in policiesAllow Aid Kits for dungeon members
No Operating Table at campBuild indoor medical before the next elite
Auto Skill on a bossManual queue

Pause is the whole skill

If you can pause, protect the head, and Aid Kit before the second Near Death, you understand Dungeon Settlers combat. Upgrade paths continue on skills and equipment. The dungeon clock continues on expedition.

Dungeon Settlers combat FAQ

Is Dungeon Settlers combat turn-based?

No. It is real-time with pause. There is no turn limit. Queue skills, items, and movement while paused.

Is there permadeath?

Yes. Dead members do not revive. Near Death can still be saved with an Aid Kit or the Operating Table.

What are head and torso health?

Two HP pools. Head at 0 can down or kill. Torso at 0 overflows damage to the head.

Can I portal out of a fight?

No. Clear or disengage, then stack the party in the portal room.

How do I pause combat?

Use the pause control at any time — including to queue Aid Kits. There is no penalty for pausing besides your own indecision.
